Under the theme “Learning Begins at Home,” the principal and staff of the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School held its 2nd annual Family Literacy Night. The event was spearheaded by the Literacy Coordinator Tr. Estelle Carter, with the hope of achieving the following objectives: to augment parent- teacher relationships, to improve parental involvement, to enhance literacy awareness, to offer assistance in improving literacy at home, to create independent learners, and improve literacy at the V.V.P.S.
This year’s event was primarily for parents and children of grades three and four. The teachers of the said grades namely: Deputy Principal Tr. Tiffany, Tr. Jerica as well as Tr. Deverelle of grade two, the principal Tr. Mavis- Fleming-Drakes and other members of staff played an active role in creating a night of education and fun. The teachers demonstrated mini lessons and engaged the parents in meaningful activities in which to support literacy at home.
The event was well attended by parents, students and well-wishers who adhered to the dress code- pajamas. The parents and their children actively participated in the various exercises. Parents also offered valuable suggestions to improve literacy in the home.
Special thanks is extended to the principal and staff, parents, students, Ms. Merlyn (school chef) and well-wishers for their contributions and support towards making our 2nd annual Family Literacy Night a huge success.
