The campus and grounds of Omolulu International School in Anguilla were transformed from a teaching and classroom setting to one of culinary and exhibition delights on Sunday, November 16.
The fundraising and silent auction event, the first of its kind at the school, was called “The Anguilla Culinary Sampler”, featuring some of the best delicacies from nine of the island’s top resorts and restaurants. Not to be outdone were a number of exhibitors and vendors representing various arts and crafts enterprises and boutiques which, like the culinary stalls, received much attention and patronage.
The event was seen as a unique and delightful way for the school, which delivers holistic and modern education to local, regional and international children, to raise funds for a number of current projects involving the community.
Mr Jordon Scheer, Principal of the school, expressed gratitude, on behalf of the staff, pupils and Parent/Teachers Association, to all the participating entities for their collaborative involvement in the event. “Your dedication and hard work is crucial to the success of Omolulu, and I offer sincere thanks on behalf of the school,” he told the large gathering.
Speaking later to the media, he said in part: “We wanted to have a big fundraiser this year so that we can get started on a number of projects. One of the things that we are currently working on is a large multi-sport community court behind the school. We have just completed part of it, but we still need to raise money for the bleachers and to build a small snack shop as well. So a large portion of today’s [funds] will go towards seating for persons coming to use the facility.
“The court will be available for the community and not only for the school. We will be trying to have weekend and night games … available to the [nearby] Medical School for example. It is the first time that we have tried to have something like this and it is a collaborative effort. We have been fortunate to have some of the best restaurants on the island which came to donate their time and expertise to make this effort a success.”
Asked about the progress of the school, Mr Scheer replied: “As the Principal, I will be overseeing the daily operations of the school as well as the future planning. The idea eventually is to expand the school to include a middle school and a secondary school which we feel there is a need for. Everything that we are doing is leading towards that point and part of my role is to start that process.”
Meanwhile, Mrs Janine Edwards, Member of the School Board and Parent/Teachers Association, was equally delighted with the support of everyone and the collaborative effort towards the continued success of the Omolulu International School.
