Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks Appointed Dean of the Anguilla Community College

Dr Phyllis Fleming Banks tifThe Anguilla Community College (ACC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks as Dean of the Anguilla Community College.

Dr. Fleming-Banks has a long and distinguished career in education, management, human resource development and training in the public and private/hospitality sectors. She is no stranger to the ACC, having served as an adjunct member of the ACC Team since its inception as the Community College Development Unit, and as a member of the Hospitality Advisory Committee.

In addition to her involvement with the ACC for the past eight years, her experience in education has ranged from the Primary to the Tertiary/University level. For more than two decades, she has been an adjunct member of the University of the West Indies Distance Education/Open Campus Team (UWI/OC), where she has held teaching as well as course management positions. She also serves as one of the Senior Master Tutors involved in the delivery of the Managing and Facilitating Online Instruction (MFOI) initial training course at the UWIOC – a course that prepares established and would-be staff for online facilitation in the UWI Open Campus.

Her UWI/OC experience has also provided her the opportunity to work with large cross-sections of educators in the region and beyond on various professional development and other initiatives, including, course writing, Second Examiner duties and Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). She has been involved in numerous UWI/OC Assessment and other Professional Development Training and more recently, was part of the team of Trainers leading the UWI/OC staff through the Revised GPA Assessment training. Dr. Fleming-Banks is also involved in research related to the influence of training for application in Online and Distant Learning (ODL).

As a Subject Matter t (SME) in the field of Sociology, she has applied the skill of assessment standardization to course management and has extensive experience in this area, having served as Course Coordinator for one of the largest courses in the UWI Open Campus for the past seven years.

Dr. Fleming-Banks was also the co-author of the National Reports on the Status of Women for the Governments of Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, for the United Nations Fourth World Conference on the Status of Women and was a regular participant/expert in the Regional Meetings of United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization.

From 2000 – 2003, she served as Chairperson of the Project and Transition Boards charged with the decentralisation of health services and the establishment of the Health Authority of Anguilla (HAA) on behalf of the Government of Anguilla. She was also the first Chairperson of the inaugural Board of Directors which led the Health Authority through to its accreditation by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation in 2007.

Dr. Fleming-Banks brings a wide varied expertise and experience in education and administration to the position of Dean at the ACC and is looking forward to working with the staff, students and other stakeholders. Speaking about her appointment, the Anguillian Sociologist/Educator says: “I am delighted to join the dynamic team at the ACC on a full time basis, as we continue to respond to the needs of the community in the pursuit of our goal of contributing meaningfully to the development of Anguilla and the region at large.”
