The next general election in Anguilla is constitutionally due in 2015, but political pundits have been trying to determine and predict the exact date of the polling.
As is customary over the years, however, and under the constitution, only the Chief Minister can set the date for the election. The current leader of Government, Mr Hubert Hughes, has been mum about that actual date, only indicating teasingly, perhaps, that he can carry it down to June.
Speaking at a rally at Island Harbour on Saturday, November 15, organised to announce the new leader of his Anguilla United Movement, Mr Hughes had this to say:
“The election call is my call. As political leader of Anguilla, Chief Minister, and Leader of Government Business, the secret about the date of the election is my secret. And I will take everything into account, including the many things we have in the pipeline, including the airport expansion project which I will fight and die for.”
Mr Hughes also referred to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for a proposed tourism project at the eastern end of Anguilla, as one of the projects in the pipeline.
