There appears to be general agreement that this year has seen the largest ever street revelry on the island for the Anguilla Summer Festival or Carnival as the event is otherwise called.
One of the heavily-crowded activities was the J’ouvert jam session which slowly made its way from the area of the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre in The Valley to Road Bay, Sandy Ground, for the Caribbean Beach Party on Monday, August 4. The second was the colourful Parade of Troupes in The Valley area with large numbers of floats carrying competition winners and accompanied by hundreds of revellers.
This year was the fortieth anniversary of the Anguilla Summer Festival dubbed Carnival 40. One of the features of the Parade of Troupes was the appearance, on the leading float, of Dr O M Linda Banks, who was one of the carnival queen contestants in the formative years of the cultural events.
Combined, the crowds at both events mentioned above, were in the thousands. A welcome feature was that the events were orderly and virtually incident-free.
Commissioner of Police, Mr Rudolph Proctor, commended all persons for their excellent behaviour.
