Certainly not a novice to lights, camera, action, but when introduced to the world of strength- training, dieting and cardio it was more of a challenge than strutting the runway in a bikini contest.
My competitive career as an amateur figure athlete blossomed after attending the 2009 Anguilla Amateur Bodybuilding and Body-fitness competition with my dearest, Dale Brown. His words were “Roxii, you would do well in that show; your body is just as good as or even better than those athletes.” Up to today he still encourages and drives me to aim for greater achievements.
After more approaches and encouragement back in early 2010, I decided to participate in the unique sport, The Anguilla Amateur Bodybuilding and Body Fitness competition. With only three months to train, I knew it would be an uphill task and back then, I could not claim to be dedicated, disciplined, committed or patient. Story told, I possessed none of those qualities vital for success in the sport; but my physical frame was ideal. In retrospect, it was all about the fun, laughter and excitement with my gym buddies. However, in spite of the whining and complaining during preparation I persevered, entered the competition and captured second place, just behind a veteran in the Anguilla Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness competition in July 2010.
Later the following year I competed in St. Martin’s Inter-Island Championships representing Anguilla and again I obtained second place. To this date my body has never failed me, placing me in the top ranks in all competitions.
As a figure competitor much discipline is required and this is an art that can be improved with maturity. I also learned that one has to be focused, determined, consistent and persistent; as these are some characteristics necessary for success in the sport of bodybuilding and bodyfitness. Not only are these characteristics important for this type of sport but they are actually required for a successful life as well.
In my most recent competition July 2014, as a result of my late start, I felt as if I was being tortured. My trainer, Mr. Joseph Pradel pulled me up and gave me a lecture. Eventually I began doing what I should have done from the start; eating, training, practicing, getting massages, and trying to master sleeping on time. I tried as much as possible to avoid stress as this can cause numerous diseases and disorders including depression, weight gain, headaches, hypertension, and heart attacks. Once again, these combined efforts yielded success and I placed first in the Bodyfitness Open Class category. Fitness is a lifestyle and I encourage young adults and more matured persons to reap the health benefits that can be gained by taking part in sporting activities such as bodybuilding and bodyfitness.
Success in the Anguilla Amateur Bodybuilding & Bodyfitness competition has not been a bed of roses for me. Despite the challenges, the journey has been fruitful and I am looking forward to greater accomplishments. My upcoming competition (2-4 October 2014) will be the Central America and Caribbean Championships (CAC) to be held in St. Maarten at the Maho Resort. I will represent Anguilla where an opportunity to obtain my Pro Card awaits me.
To the one who continues to shower me with good health and blessings, my God, I say thank you. Neither could have I achieved success without the assistance of so many supporters who helped in shaping my fitness career along the journey.
Special thanks to my Trainer and Massage Therapist Mr. Joseph Pradel and to Mr. Trevor Lake for your stalwart support. Thanks to the staff members of Caribbean Commercial Bank-your confidence in me is highly appreciated. To my family and friends, La Severine Fitness team, work out partners, nutritionist, cosmetologist, fans and all supporters of the bodybuilding and bodyfitness sport. Thank you.
