Police Commissioner in Anguilla, Rudolph Proctor, has advised all businesses and individuals to ensure that they have proper security measures in place to protect their interests. He was at the time speaking in relation to a number of violent robberies and reports of gunfire on the island.
Commissioner Proctor went on: “I also want to send a strong warning to parents. A lot of these youngsters’ parents and other family members only come to the fore when they are already in trouble. We already saw three robberies where patrons leaving entertainment facilities were confronted by persons trying to take their money and jewellery.
His comments were made to the media on Wednesday, July 9, following statements about recent criminal activities in Anguilla by Inspector Emris Rogers. The media representatives were told about the following robberies and other crimes:
On Saturday, July 5, at about 5.00 am, D.L. of South Hill reported that he left Boca Chica Night Club at Blowing Point to go to his vehicle. He was then approached by a gunman who robbed him of his gold chain, valued over US$2,000.00.
The same Saturday, July 5, at about 12.30 am, A.M. of Blowing Point reported that he arrived at his home from a bingo game. After locking his vehicle, he was approached by three masked men who demanded money. They beat him with a stick and pulled off his pant which contained US$200.00.
On Sunday, July 6, Police responded to a report of gunshots being fired in Sandy Hill. On arrival it was reported that someone in a green motor car had fired a gunshot at another car.
On Wednesday, July 9, at about 3.36 am, D.M. of South Hill reported that he left Boca Chica Night Club in Blowing Point on his way to his vehicle. He was then approached by a masked gunman who tried to take his gold chain, but without success. The attacker then pulled a gun and fired a shot at him but missed.
The Royal Anguilla Police Force Criminal Investigation Department is investing all of the above incidents.
Meanwhile, the regular weekly Police Report for June 2-9, which also mentions these robberies, stated that an attempted burglary was committed at The Forest.
The report also said that of the sixteen serious crimes during that week, there were nine thefts at The Forest, Roaches Hill, The Farrington, Limestone Bay, Sandy Ground and Blowing Point. The stolen items included a truck battery, a water pump, cellular phones and an undisclosed amount of money.
Five persons were arrested during the above period as follows: two males to prevent a breach of the peace; one male on a default warrant; one male for possession of cannabis; and one male for grievous bodily harm.
