Caring for the elderly is one of the most important things we can do. Whether trying to manage the symptoms of a long-term illness or just to improve your general health and mobility, physical therapy may help you reach your goals and maintain your independence.

Seniors at home, or in a nursing home, may have a decline in overall health as part of the ageing process, and also from other medical conditions. Fortunately, some of the complications associated with ageing can be reduced with the help of physical therapy. Physical therapy may help provide some relief from pain, reduced risk of falls and increase overall quality of life.

Even individuals who are considered “bed bound” can benefit from exercise and strength training. Range of motion can be provided in bed to maintain flexibility and prevent contractures, increase coordination, strength and balance. Bed activities can also prevent decubitus ulcers (bed sores), improve bowel and bladder function, reduce the chance of developing pneumonia and improve cardiovascular function.

Physical therapy can also be effective in treating other common conditions i.e. Arthritis, Stroke, Diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

For elderly persons living at home, a home modification program may be necessary to ensure safety with all daily activities and prevent falls.

I do not take for granted the continuous around the clock demand on the caregiver. Physical therapy can also be beneficial to caregiversby providing easier methods of performing their caregiving responsibilities. Therefore, caregiver, education is also included: proper body mechanics and their role in recovery. I also encourage family members to participate in the recovery process of their loved ones, through assisting with exercises at home, verbal encouragement, ensuring meals are prepared and medications administered.

Call Dr. Richardson for more information or to make an appointment for a complete assessment.
