Dear Mr. H. Hughes,
As I write you this letter my heart and soul are almost at complete peace. I am sitting in the beautiful Anguillian breeze with my morning coffee while on the patio at Beach Escape Villa. I am surrounded by the absolute beauty of your island while listening to my family laugh and make memories after another wonderful year.
Stefen and I spent our honeymoon at Cap Juluca 11 years ago and we fell in love with everything and everyone on Anguilla. We return annually to feed our souls. From early morning walks on the beach with a garbage bag to teach our children the way, to late lunches at The Beach Shack and planning our trip around weekend BBQ. We embrace good values and love passing them to our children…especially in such an amazing place like Anguilla.
That being said, we are deeply concerned that there may be a breakdown of values occurring right here in Blowing Point, at the Dolphin Discovery. Upon our arrival on 6/29 we were shocked by the amount of mess along the beach from the patrons at Dolphin Discovery. There was plastic garbage blowing, bottles left in the sand and TONS of chairs littering the beach. As we walked to FBI (Ferry Boat Inn) for our evening stroll we collected over 20 chairs that were blowing over in the wind. This continued for a couple of nights and it became our evening outing to clean up the trash and chairs blowing in the wind. The first evening we missed 2 chairs which ended up in the sea. The next morning, I retrieved the chairs and brought it to the attention of DD management. The problem was corrected for 3 days, only to return.
This is a MAJOR PROBLEM! Anguilla thrives on natural beauty, white beaches and tranquility wrapped in blue. Yet toxic plastic chairs are blowing into the sea on almost a daily basis…only to destroy reefs, sea life, fishing and more. We both know this is not the first time this has been an issue but it must be rectified.
We understand that business development is necessary for the long term viability of Anguilla, but at what cost? The solution seems simple. Certainly with the revenue the Dolphin Discovery is bringing in it can afford to properly maintain its portion of your beautiful island.
We recognize that the Anguillian Government has always protected its treasure from over commercialization, and we deeply hope this is not the beginning of a reversal of that belief system. As my husband would say, all men are to be guided by the square and compass, so should those fortunate enough to have a business on the island.
