Thursday, May 29, the day preceding Anguilla Day, was an eventful time at the Omolulu International School, at The Quarter, where The Anguillian newspaper was invited at a joint function involving teachers, students and parents.
Lead Teacher, Ms Racquel Graham, explained the event: “We gather to celebrate various cultures represented by students at Omolulu. We have between 18 and 20 cultures here, and we also came together to recognise Anguilla Day.
“We are using today to celebrate the cultures and to recognise that, although we are all different, we are in fact one people and one Omolulu. We are also happy that this is taking place in Anguilla, the host island, as part of plans for its national day.”
Ms Graham continued: “This is an annual event. Before, when we were the Teacher Gloria Omolulu School, we had this programme installed and we are now continuing it. We have been able to get more parents to participate this year, so instead of having the teachers preparing the students to demonstrate their cultures, we had the parents doing so.
“We also have the feast of nations where everyone brings a national dish – appetizer, main course, dessert and beverage – in which we all will partake.”
Ms Graham was asked what these cultural and social events meant for the students. “Oh, it is a wonderful thing. They all look forward to showcasing their culture, and to dress up in their national attire and to wear it with pride. So it is like a sense of pride for their nation,” she added.
