In October 2013, the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School embarked on yet another project, but this time the target audience was boys. The Anguilla Social Security Board graciously partnered with the school and procured a set of drums to the tune of US$2,770.00.
The drums were blessed by Pastor Marlene Lewis-Brooks on Monday, April 28th, during a ceremony at the school. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Timothy Hodge, Director of Social Security, reiterated the Board’s commitment to the development of the youth. He further explained that any contribution from Social Security is actually a contribution from the people of Anguilla.
Mrs. Shanette Smith and Mr. Malcom Webster are the directors and tutors for the Dynamic Boys Drum Band. Mr. Webster expressed delight in being able to assist with projects, such as this one, which are intended to give young people a positive medium of expression. He is committed to working with the students until some of them are capable of taking over.
Principal of the VVPS, Mrs. Tracelyn Hamilton, noted that very often there is the tendency to overlook the boys and their needs. When they are highlighted there are too many instances of negativity. Hence, at the school they have made a conscious attempt to highlight their boys in a positive way – Members of a Drum Band. The Band is geared at bringing out the best in our boys by developing them holistically. She thanked all who came to share in the ceremony including Education Officers Charles Connor, Susan Smith and Sandra Fahie.
Mr. Winston Duncan, Link Officer for the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School, chaired the ceremony. He identified the band as ‘Dynamic Boys Drum Band’’ whose motto is: “We will Drum to the End”.
The principal, staff, parents and students of the school are grateful to Social Security which, through its sponsorship of the drums, has boosted the self-esteem, and brought smiles on the faces, of their boys. Sincere thanks to Mr. Alan Carty who has contributed badges which will be used in the Honour’s System for the promotion of the boys in the band – and to Ms. Elva Hills for capturing that joyous moment of the boys handling their drums.
Keep your ears tuned in for the sounds of the Dynamic Boys Drum Band who will make their first public appearance at Talent Expo at La Vue on Tuesday May 27th at 7:30 pm.
