The Annual General Meeting of the Soroptimist Club took place on Tuesday April 29. Events of the past year were reported and a new president and executive committee took over the running of the Club. The presidency was handed over from Donnette Richardson to Pamela Connor.
Donnette thanked members for their support during her term of office – in particular the executive members. She noted that the Club had been very successful during its 33 years and urged members to continue to work together and keep to the promises of the pledge. During her presidency she upgraded the Day Care Centre that now has new toys and playground equipment.
Secretary Josephine Gumbs gave a detailed report on the activities of the Club during the past year. This included fundraising events, the speakers at meetings, attendance at conferences, and contacts with link clubs around the world. Denise Romney gave a report on activities in the community that included the annual reading programme, the teen power rap sessions, the continued efforts to get rid of plastic bags, the Stingray guitar programme, provision of lunches for two children daily, and strategies for conflict resolution that were presented on the International Day of Peace.
The chain of office was handed over by Donnette to Pamela who recalled her participation in the Club since joining in 1990. She said that this year she envisions a programme giving support for underprivileged children that would include providing textbooks for them. She thanked members for their support in the past and hoped that support would continue for the future.
An election was held and the new executive includes President Pamela Connor, Immediate Past President Donnette Richardson, President elect Linda Banks who is also Councillor, Vice President Ursil Webster-Brooks, Secretary Yolande Richardson, Treasurer Anita Brooks, Recording Secretary Stella Horsford, Programme Action Denise Romney, and members Alison Carty, Violet Berry, Lana Hoyoung and Katherine Emmanuel.
