Nine Anguillians were among the graduating class at UVI’s 50th Commencement Exercise at the St. Thomas Campus on Saturday 17th May, 2014. The Keynote speaker was Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. Ph.D. Professor Gates, who is a Literary Scholar, Filmmaker, Journalist and Historian, reminded graduates that “you can’t know where you are going until you know where you have been”. Professor Gates who is the recipient of 52 honorary degrees and numerous prizes including the first National Humanities Medal awarded to an African American scholar (by President Bill Clinton in 1998) was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate from UVI at the Commencement Exercise.
Anguillian student Natalie Richardson, the daughter of Nathaniel and Ethne Richardson, was the Class Commencement Speaker. She delivered a rousing address to UVI’s “Incomparable Passionate Optimistic Class of 2014” announcing that the Commencement was their IPO – their Initial Public Offering.
The Anguillian graduates were Natalie Richardson, Verlyndah Rogers, Lavida Brooks, Kefentsi Davis, Krystie Webster, Krystal Webster, Thalia Lake, Nicole Abbott and Jeffrine Niles.
