Anguilla was selected to host the 2014 Visual Arts Exhibition – an annual event now in its 13th year – of the Caribbean Examinations Council. The display of artwork, which opened on Sunday, April 27, and continued until Wednesday, April 30, was mounted at the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium.
The exhibition comprised the work of students from Anguilla and all the other member territories served by the Caribbean Examinations Council. It was declared open by the Hon Jerome Roberts, Minister of Education, who delivered the feature address. Other speakers were Ms Colleen Horsford, Anguilla’s CXC Registrar; and Mr Sam Cleveland, CXC Assistant Registrar, based in Barbados. The opening ceremony was chaired by Education Officer, Charles Connor.
The ribbon to the exhibition was cut by Mr Roberts along with Mrs Navine Mairyshow, Head of the Visual Arts Department of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.
The objectives of the event were to highlight the creative work of Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Visual Arts students; expose students in the host island to what examiners consider art of a high standard; promote Visual Arts as a feasible career choice; showcase the work of the students to the public; and promote CSEC Visual Arts as a CXC subject.
The display of artwork featured works from CSEC Visual Arts examinations, over the past three years, including the work of regional top award winners. On display, in line with the Visual Arts syllabus, were drawing, leather craft, graphic and communication designs, painting and mixed-media exhibits, sculpture and ceramics, fibre and decorative arts, textile and print-making designs.
During the opening ceremony there were performances by students of the Within Dance Company; Theatre Arts students from the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School; and the school’s Steel Orchestra.
