Over 45 young people, including youth leaders and entrepreneurs attended the 5th Open Mic youth forum organised by the Department of Youth and Culture, the Anguilla National Youth Council and the National Youth Ambassador Corps. The forum which was held on Wednesday 26th March focused on “Entrepreneurship” with emphasis on business creation, development and youth employment. A panel comprising of Mr. John Roach (Chief Youth Development Officer from the Commonwealth of Dominica), Mr. Kyle Hodge (Entrepreneur and owner of Tropical Treats), Mrs. Shellecia Brooks-Johnson (Assistant Registrar Marketing, Communications, Student Services and Alumni and co-owner of My Anguilla Experience) and Ms. Jasmin Garraway (Manager – Project Management Unit at the Ministry of Finance, Tourism and Economic Development) presented on the various topics.
The young people in attendance were fully immersed in discussions and debated with the panelists on the challenges of entrepreneurship and small business development as options for employment. Possible solutions to addressing these challenges were also discussed. Young persons were urged to take full advantage of the upcoming Entrepreneur Expo scheduled for April 16th, 2014 and we also informed of the National Youth Entrepreneurial Initiative which will be launched by the Department of Youth and Culture.
Chief Minister, the Honourable Hubert Hughes, and Director in the Department of Youth and Culture, Mr. Bren Romney, were in attendance and participated in the dialogue. Open Mic 5 was transmitted live by Kool FM radio.
