Short stories Grade 1 & 2The wheels were turned as students of Grades One and Two of Omololu International School sat in the Author’s Chair during a two experience of writing stories. Often times, these little ones are seated on the carpet listening to their teacher read a story or listening to an electronic story mesmerized by intonations, expressions and imaginative thoughts. This time, after a two week iterative process of brainstorming, drafting, editing, illustrating and publishing, the students took the hot seat as they proudly presented their own original work to an appreciative audience of their peers.
Students were guided through the entire process by their enthused Teacher from creating story webs, developing characters, carving out the setting/scene in rich detail using all their senses, developing a “problem” in the story and unveiling the “solution”. They designed colourful covers for their books reflecting their chosen theme and “published” their stories. Students were excited about the process which culminated in a reader’s theatre publishing party where all students gathered on the carpet, each taking a turn to sit in the Author’s Chair to present their story. Students were asked to tell the author something they liked about the story and offer positive feedback on what could be worked on for the future. The students are already talking about their second and third books!
