Farmers in Anguilla will have a unique addition to their compost heaps or mulching material to enable them to have better yields of vegetables for the local market. That assistance is being provided by Malliouhana-Auberge Resort now undergoing refurbishing to continue its well-known contribution to upmarket tourism on the island from November this year.
On Tuesday, this week, the resort turned over to the Department of Agriculture a quantity of shredded paper, from hundreds of old files and other records dating back to 1989, for use by farmers. General Manager of the property, Mr John Vasatka, explained that JTR Advance Security Company had partnered with the resort to shred its old files for use in farming operations on the island.
“We would have dumped the raw material otherwise in the landfill at Corito which nobody wants to do,” Mr Vasatka said. “In its present form, coming out of the shredding van, it can be used, with other material, to make compost for agricultural plots. So it will actually help Anguilla to grow things as opposed to going into the landfill where it does not help the island. We want to thank JTR Security Company, and we will be the first to recommend them when we know of other companies which would like to use their services.”
Mr Vasatka, who has been hired by the new owners of the hotel to oversee the refurbishing work and manage the property, went on: “Ann Gumbs and the Roydons kept very good books and all the receipts. It is just part of good bookkeeping but at some point you don’t need it any longer.”
Ms Gumbs, the property’s Controller, said in part: “We went to the agricultural fair and saw one of the mulching projects there. Knowing that we had tons of paper to depose of, we spoke to the Director of Agriculture, Mr William Vanterpool, and told him that if we can get the paper shredded, he can have it.” She was pleased that Mr Russell Reid, the hotel’s Director of Human Resources, had made arrangements to obtain JTR’s high-speed shredder for that purpose.
Mr Carlton Fleming, speaking on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, thanked Malliouhana-Auberge Resort and JTR Security Mobile Shredding Services for the material to be used as mulch or organic-based medium.
Mr Franklin Rogers, proprietor of JTR Security, said his company got the idea to obtain the mobile shredder after seeing the large volume of paper that the banks on the island had to dispose of. He saw the service as a vital part of his general security work in Anguilla.
