Colleagues at Viceroy Anguilla had a day off from work to enjoy a series of fun-filled sporting activities – a culmination of such events over a period of one year.
The varied activities were held at the James Ronald Webster Park on Thursday, February 27. Some seven teams participated. They were the Hurricanes, Iquanas, Earth Tones, Warriors, Sand Sharks, Scorpions and Strikers.
Viceroy’s General Manager, Mr Richard Alexander, spoke to The Anguillian early during the various events which involved a number of the property’s colleagues across all of its departments.
“We have seven fraternities, each one having its own logo and its own lucky mascot,” he reported. “I happened to be part of the Hurricanes fraternity who are currently in the lead with thirty-eight points and our closest adversary is on thirty-six points.
“We have had competitions throughout the year. We had such events as domino, swimming and cycling competitions; and now we have this amazing Olympics sports day with twenty different tournaments. It is a great bonding exercise and everyone is having a fantastic time.
Mr Alexander was asked how the resort, in this somewhat busy period was able to find the time for a sports meet.
“Normally in a hotel environment you have competitions between one department and another – such as Food & Beverage versus Rooms, Housekeeping versus Engineering etc.,” he explained. “But we decided to mix everyone up so each fraternity has a wide diversity of representation from different departments.”
Mr Alexander continued: “The staff members are very competitive, and Anguillians are naturally great athletes, so this gives them an opportunity, an arena, to display their skills.
“It is a fairly unique thing. It reminds me of sports clubs when you have different houses and they compete against each other. But now that we initiated this in 2013, it will be ongoing every year – and each year there will be a new champion hopefully.”
The results of the event were as follows:
1st Place Hurricanes – 135
2nd Place Earth Tones – 115
3rd Place Golden Warriors – 93
4th Place Sandsharks– 71..
