The month of February brought out the best in students at Omololu International School (OIS) as they participated in a number of stimulating experiences. One such experience was that of a full day “Arts In Motion” Workshop offered to students in Grades One to Six. This workshop was the brainchild of the OIS Team, who identified Mr. Hans Minnaert of St. Maarten to be the facilitator. Mr. Minnaert’s stellar experience and background in Theatre and the Performing Arts made him the perfect facilitator to guide innovative expressions of various artforms.
The “Arts in Motion” workshop offered OIS students the opportunity to explore various genres including drama, poetry, dance and folk songs. Students worked towards delivering a presentation for parents to view, showcasing all elements of team work, creativity, listening skills, commitment and communication. This was indeed displayed by the final product where students demonstrated the ability to compose their own collective poem, lead musical pieces, participate in a mirror dance and click their heels whilst singing folk songs.
Mr. Hans Minnaert worked through the different grade teachers at the school to ensure this exposure also provided arts facilitation skill, so that the teachers could deliver continued exposure on a sustainable basis. Teachers were intrigued to learn interesting ways to stimulate the talents of their students outside of the classroom. Parents were delighted about the energy created at the workshop and have asked for follow-up sessions, as the program had been delightfully received by the children.
The Early Learners division of OIS did not miss out, as they too, were exposed to the Arts through arts and craft, song and creative play. The execution of their creative displays were coordinated by Giselle Bartlette of Kidz Kare and Michelle Owen-Vasilis supported by the grade teachers. Children were actively engaged in the decorating of cupcakes, making giant artsy hearts, Treasure Baskets Hunt, a Musical Hearts Game whilst developing their fine motor skills and teamwork competencies.
