Omolulu International School (OIS) inspired by the approach of the International Baccalaureate programme is ensuring that learning takes a “hands on” and interactive approach. Field trips form a key element of the programme’s mission and it pushes teaching and learning beyond the student’s desk.
Over the last two weeks, the students of Grade 3 and 4 of OIS have been studying the unit of Water for Science. In an effort to further ensure that students fully grasped the concept and extended their learning, several discovery activities were organized. Among this unit, students were tasked with interviewing persons who work in any area of the water arena to find out how water is collected, treated, distributed and tested throughout Anguilla and what challenges may exist in this area. Students were further assigned to find out how safe Anguilla water resources were. In the end, students themselves had to design and build a water distillation model/ filtration which they demonstrated for their classmates. Students also wrote a reflection of their experience while conducting the field activities. This holistic, engaging approach was welcomed by the enthusiastic learners.
The understanding of water facilities and what they do would not have been possible without the kind accommodations of Mr. Rommel Hughes of the Water Department and his staff, and Mr. Ambrell Richardson and his staff at the Environmental Health Department. Both departments assisted in sharing their knowledge through engaging students in on-site observations and thorough discussions.
