The Anguilla United Movement Government of Chief Minister Hubert Hughes held a public meeting at the Tyre Shop at George Hill on Tuesday evening, February 18.
The meeting was an opportunity for the government officials to report on the functioning of their ministries and departments over the past four years. The officials also gave an account of various other matters relating to the development of the island, including tourism, and other public and private sector investment projects.
The speakers, in order of their addresses, were Mr Patrick Hanley, Adviser to the Chief Minister; Mr Jerome Roberts, Minister of Home Affairs; Mr Haydn Hughes, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Sports; Mr Evan Gumbs, Minister of Infrastructure, Communications, Housing and Utilities; and Mr Hubert Hughes, Chief Minister and Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Tourism, Industry, Commerce and Health and Social Development.
While the Chief Minister reported on some of his government’s accomplishments he said that his Anguilla United Movement had in fact begun its election campaign. “The record is there to be seen,” he told his listeners. “That’s why tonight we have started the election campaign because we want time to educate you and to bring the facts to you.”
Earlier, Mr Hughes not only said that Mr Patrick Hanley will be the AUM candidate in Road North, but spoke about new AUM candidates in two other constituencies. “As one of the speakers said tonight [Haydn Hughes], in Island Harbour we are looking at an outstanding medical physician as the next AUM Minister of Health,” Mr Hughes stated. “As a doctor…ear, nose and throat specialist, dentist, this man is a genius.” He observed that Sam Webster, who did so much for the island, working as an AUM Adviser, “has willingly sacrificed his future in politics to his brother.” He added: “In the extreme west of this island, we have a young, brilliant lawyer who will be representing that constituency.’’
