photo 2-3The 3rd Annual Julucas Cup Boat Race took place at Maunday’s Bay on December 29th, 2013. The event was put together as a way of giving guests who are not on the island during the boat racing season in August a chance to experience the island’s deep-rooted racing history. A number of guests became crew members during the race and learned a lot from the experience.
A total of three boats raced from Cap Juluca, which sponsored the event, to a buoy near Anguillita for a total of two laps finishing at Cap Juluca. The three boats that competed were De Storm, the F5 Tornado and Kedro’s Pride. The F5 Tornado and De Storm traveled from Little Harbour to participate in the race.
The F5 Tornado, which recently won the St. Maarten Philipsburg Regatta, won the Cap Juluca race and received a cash prize of seven hundred and fifty dollars. Six hundred and fifty dollars went to De Storm in second place, and six hundred dollars went to Kedro’s Pride in third.
Captain and builder of the F5 Tornado, Oris Smith, said: “ We went down the first leg and we were a little bit heavy – so on the down wind we lightened up and threw out some sand. Once we crossed the other boats we tried to stay ahead of them.”

Director of Activities and Boat Race Organizer, Cardigan Connor, noted: “Hopefully next year we can have more boats take part, but we greatly appreciate the turnout. “
