Friday 29th November 2013, the much anticipated Inter-House Oratorical Competition was realized. The competition was aimed at exposing students to public speaking, a key component of improving and enhancing literacy. Literacy Coordinator, Mrs. Estelle Carter, spearheaded the activity with the entire staff’s support.
There are three houses at the school, namely Snappers (Red House), Marlins (Blue House) and Dolphins (Yellow House). Two children from each house were selected to prepare and deliver a speech on the topic: ‘How I can be a Star at my School’, not to exceed four minutes.
Prior to the Competition, Literacy Champion, Mrs. Vanessa Hobson, presented the children with valuable tips on public speaking. Teachers from each House coached the contestants.
The competition was moderated by Mr. Winston Duncan, Link Officer of the School. The judges were Mrs. Vanessa Hobson, Ms. Sandra Fahie and Mr. Charles Connor. Mrs. Shanette Smith was the official Time-Keeper.
At the end of the competition The Dolphins emerged winners with a combined total of 423 points. The Marlins followed in second place with 401 points, while The Snappers came third with 392 points.
Vernesha Webster (Yellow House) was adjudged best speaker. The lone male contestant, Andrew Baijnauth (RedHouse) placed second with 216 points and Olivia Fayet placed third 206 points.
All of the contestants were commended for the high standard exhibited in their presentations and all received certificates of participation. The three best speakers received ‘Star’ trophies.
