From 10 to 13 December, 12 young people from the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School Environmental and Conservation Club participated in the eighth annual Anguilla National Trust (ANT) Adventure Anguilla environmental camp.
Adventure Anguilla was created in 2006 as a week-long outdoors programme that seeks to raise awareness amongst Anguilla’s youth about the importance of and interconnections among the island’s land, wetland, and coastal ecosystems.
The 2013 day camp combined in-class lectures and discussions with in-field activities which gave participants an opportunity to learn about and discover Anguilla’s natural environment. This year’s camp involved some of the most challenging outdoor activities that have been conducted to date and included a beach-side fitness test and relay, a catch-and-release fishing excursion in Island Harbour, a coastal hike from Sandy Ground to Crocus Bay, a hike around Bad Cox Pond, an activity that involved recycling paper and metal materials into Christmas ornaments, and a swim at Sandy Ground. Introduced during last year’s camp, the 2013 Adventure Anguilla camp also included an overnight activity on the ANT grounds during which students played team games, roasted marshmallows, and watched movies.
The ANT is grateful for the support from Mr. Dubois “Nature Boy” Webster, ANT interns and volunteers Tashim Fleming, Giovanni Hughes, Jibri Lewis, and Aimee Maggiacomo, and the ALHCS Environmental Club coordinators, Ms Joselyn Theophile-Richardson, Ms Shanika Webster, and Ms Maxine Alonzo.
