People adopt dogs for many different reasons. Is it because your dog has gone missing or died, do you need a guard dog, are you looking for a companion or has your child nagged you long enough that it is time to give in. all of these are very worthy reasons but first take TIME to consider whether you should be providing a forever home for a dog or puppy.
TIME COMMITMENT: Getting a dog is exciting but owing a dog is a long-term commitment as most dogs have a life-span of 8 to 16 years. So before you take the plunge, ask yourself if you have enough time to provide the essentials of life such as food, water, shelter, exercise and love. If you adopt a puppy you will also need to set aside time to train them.
INTENTION AND REASON: Many people get a dog simply because they are cute and adorable and they always let their hearts rule their heads, they forget that puppies will grow into bigger and health problems might arise when the dogs gets older. Ask yourself what is the intention of you getting a dog or more than one dog? for most of the reasons were outlined in the introduction paragraph to this article. Large dogs are good for protection and house watching and smaller dogs for companionship but really there is no particular size that provides the best for a particular purpose. Get to know the personality of the dog before you adopt. Touch them, love them and talk to them. Whatever the reasons maybe you should have a good human-dog relationship. Dogs that are loved are the best guard dogs as they will go to the ends of the earth to protect you.
MONEY AND FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: Next important thing you need to consider is about the ongoing costs for food, medical care including flea and tic prevention and annual vaccinations. Who is going to look after your dog if you go away?
ENVIRONMENT: Giving your dog a comfortable space to live is equally important. Due to the size, activity level and temperament, some breeds need more space and fenced yard to run. Some breeds are smaller in size and more sociable maybe live indoor. Some working dogs are protective, powerful and aggressive may need to live outdoor with fenced to avoid possible of attacking stranger. So do you have a suitable place for your dog to live as part of your family? Do prepare a proper space well before getting a dog home and remember, it’s going to be your dog’s permanent place for him to sleep, rest, cuddle and hideout.
After you have considered all the above and decided to go ahead to get a dog or puppy, the next thing you need to ask yourself are the following:
Should you get a dog or a puppy? Puppies are often more adorable and attractive than adult dogs but they do need training. Toilet training as well as a need to chew are example to things requiring your attention. Some people believe they would prefer to train a dog themselves rather than adopt a dog which may have had no training. Either way you will need to expect to train a puppy or a dog but usually puppies require more attention.
So, when is the best time to get a dog? Well, you may plan to get a dog home during your work break so that you can devote some time and attention to your dog or puppy. As a new comer your dog needs some time to get used to the new environment, therefore don’t get a pet home if you plan to go away for a while. Do plan well before bringing a dog home.
