Commissioner Rudolph Proctor is once again speaking out on incidents related to illegal drag racing on the roads of Anguilla.
His most recent comments followed the funeral service for the late Esterline Silwood Connor at the Bethel Methodist Church on Monday afternoon. He explained that he was approached by a family member of Connor to have a few cars from the Club and some motorbikes to be part of the funeral procession. He said however that the understanding was that as a salute to the deceased the car club members would rev-up their engines when the body entered the cemetery.
However, some motorists displayed wreckless behaviour on the public roads following the church service.
“Absolutely no permission was granted for anybody to conduct car stunts, burn out with mechanically propelled vehicles on any streets of Anguilla on that day,” he emphasised.
He contended that such a display on the streets of South Hill and Sandy Ground was totally wreckless and total disrespect to the Connor’s family. He said that he, along with other police officers, were present at the funeral and witnessed the behaviour.
“It was neither entertaining, nor sympathetic. It was simply wreckless, for what I have seen and for those reasons those persons will be arrested,” he stated. These stunts were done in the presence of police officers. We have seen them and we are taking action.”
He said persons could have been killed on Monday afternoon and that charges are being prepared to be filed in the court.
Six to seven persons will be charged, he added
Mr Proctor explained that he is not against drag racing in Anguilla but that once persons take it to the public streets then there would be a problem.
