Vector Awareness Month (October 1-31), an initiative of the Department of Health Protection and the Environmental Health Unit, continued on Tuesday this week with the 2013 Inter-House Spelling B Competition.
The event, held at the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium, was attended by over 200 third form students at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School. Ten of their fellow students (two each from the five houses) participated in the quiz.
The results were as follows: Orange House – 29 points; Pink House – 25; Maroon House – 21; Purple House – 20; and Yellow House – 11. The Best speller was Jayda Hughes of Orange House.
During the opening ceremony, the gathering was addressed by Leroy Richardson, Senior Environmental Officer, on the theme of Vector Awareness Month – “It’s time for those fleas to flee”. He said in part: “Fleas have a complex four-stage life cycle. The control of fleas on your pets and in your home must be addressed in all stages of their life cycle to stop the problem of infestation.”
The main activities organised for Vector Awareness Month were announced as follows: a Pre-School Jingle Competition; a Primary School Poster and Theme Competition; the Campus B Stanley Mussington Essay Competition; the Campus A Inter-House Spelling B Competition and the Best Kept Church Cemetery Competition.
The Caribbean Commercial Bank is the platinum sponsor of Vector Awareness Month.
