One of the end of summer highlights for the children in Stoney Ground, Caul’s Bottom and surrounding areas is the Annual Sunset Homes Fun Day which took place on August 31st this year. Old fashioned community camaraderie hallmarked the day as Sunset Homes, a Property Development firm in Anguilla, declared its eleventh anniversary of sponsorship and coordination of this annual event on its office grounds located in Stoney Ground. This year’s event took the format of a Fun Fair where there were booths filled with games, contests, hoola hooping, juggling games, art and craft, face painting and food and beverages. Kidz Kare Inc. and Arijah Foundation also operated active, educational fun booths with prizes that the children thoroughly enjoyed. The culmination of the evening was the eagerly contested Tug-o-War which was followed by the distribution of educational gifts for all children present.
This event comes out of an active cooperation within the community, reminiscent of traditional communal activities, where villagers come together to work on select projects. Members of the community in the area prepare for this event. Invitations to the Fun Day passes by word of mouth from house to house in the area. The event aims to encourage community spirit and to provide a stimulating, productive activity for the children where they can win educational prizes. Over 100 children and their families were present and all children attendance received school and sports supplies ranging from back packs, exercise books, stationery supplies, footballs and water bottles.
Appreciation goes out to all the persons who gave so generously of their time and resources including: The Royal Anguilla Police Force, Games Director Alfred “Allie” Douglas, Coordinators Joan Johnson and Alma Gumbs, Charlene Roach, Athnel Robertson and other members of the Sunset Homes staff.
Special mention must be made of the very generous donation made by Joseph Williams and Kathareen Rogers who sent a wonderful array of special educational gifts and supplies for the children. These two persons are Anguillians living in the US who continue to contribute back to the children of this community through various programs and events. BELK in the USA must receive special commendation for supporting the cause and donating educational supplies for the children.
Stellar support was received from supporting sponsors including Tequila Sunrise Villa (Joel and Robin Globus), Sandcastle Villa (Pageau-Goyette family), Arijah Foundation, Kidz Kare Inc., Tropical Treats, Anguilla Football Association, LIME, Best Buy Supermarket, Lawrence “Big Time” Hodge, J.W Proctors, Mary’s Bakery, Ivor and Carmen Gumbs, The Royal Anguilla Police Force, Aronel, Anita and Canita Ruan, Tropical Shipping/Haskins Ltd., Brother Lee and his Team at Kool FM and The Anguillian Newspaper.
