Fellow citizens of Anguilla:
How concerned and interested are our politicians about our country? If you ask yourself this question, at least once, I am sure you will come to the conclusion that they are all blind to the simple fact about doing things that will enhance the look of our beautiful little country.
I would like to draw to the attention of all the people of this island the old building in The Valley, which was known as Pumping Station Number One, or the Old Valley Well, and its deployable condition.
The doors and windows give one the impression that we recently had a major hurricane and the building suffered a catastrophic blow. It is unsightly and offensive. It leaves visitors with a bad impression about us, Anguillians.
Recently, I saw some tourists taking photos of a stone with a plaque depicting the building as a historical site. Imagine they took pictures of the stone and not the building. It is an insult to our elders who had the ambition to erect such a building.
There is an inscribed date on the wall, facing the street, which says “1917,” the same year that my mother was born, making the building 96 years old. That in itself makes it a real piece of our historical heritage. All it takes is some wood, paint and a little mortar to fix a few holes in the concrete walls.
Many of our politicians, preachers, talk show hosts, community leaders and civil servants pass that building numerous times a day and do not acknowledge it. Tell us how can we fix the children of this country, if we can’t find time to fix something of such importance? How can we really and truly enhance our tourism industry?
