photo (8)In celebration of International Literacy Day, the Department of Education hosted its second annual Jymjams Jamboree on Saturday, 7th 2013 at the Teachers’ Resource Centre. The two-hour event targeted grade 2 students from the island’s public schools.
The aim of the event was to expose students to interactive, fun-filled, literacy based activities. The intention was to foster within the students a greater appreciation for the importance of literacy in their daily lives. Items on the programme included:“Guess Who? Guess What?”, “Jymjam Story Time”, “Science Surprise” and “Do This, Do That”. All activities required students to use cognitive skills to complete tasks ranging from following instructions to answering questions based on a story. The assortment of activities demonstrated the current multi-dimensional definition of literacy.
Once again this year, the Education Department was pleased with the large turnout of enthusiastic students who participated willingly in all activities. Gratitude is extended to the chairperson, Mr. Colin Johnson, the story teller Mrs Marilyn Richardson, parents, guardians, the staff of the Teachers’ Resource Centre and all others who contributed to the success of the event.
