The Arijah Children’s Foundation held a successful three-week summer camp, at the Blossom Centre, for kindergarteners who were in need of support before going on to Grade One, as well as for life skills students.
The summer camp was entitled “Bring on Learning” and was conducted by Mrs Njeri Carty.
She commended the work of the students who were able to accomplish various skills in site words, reading and listening comprehension, sound symbol relationship, short term memory skills, developing social skills, and letter sound recognition.
Mrs Carty said the camp was beneficial to all the students and thanked LIME for contributing the funds.
Founder of Arijah Children’s Foundation, Renuka Harrigan, said this was the first time the Centre held a summer camp for kindergartners.
She said she’s pleased the Centre was able to assist students, and that since its opening in 2010 several persons have reached out and supported the cause. She added:
“And it’s really because people have reached out to us and assisted us in some way that we were able to continue to help the children. So we are deeply grateful for your support…There are many other students who could use more help and because of limited resources we haven’t been able to assist and we hope to continue and grow hereforth.”
Her Excellency the Governor Christian Scott said the Blossom Centre was indeed an exciting place for the children to learn and grow.
She said the Governor’s Office had supported the Centre this year with financial support of 12 thousand US dollars for training.
Her Excellency wished the teachers all the best in their future endeavors as they continue to grow and expand the Centre.
During the ceremony, held on August 2nd, certificates were presented to students and volunteers.
Special thanks were also given to students from the St James Medical School who volunteered their services in assisting with the special needs children.
