Now in the third week since her inauguration as Governor of Anguilla on July 26, Her Excellency, Ms Christina Scott, officially began her first guided tour of the island in District 1 on Tuesday, August 13, despite a very busy schedule. She was accompanied by the Elected Representative, Mr Othlyn Vanterpool, and Mr Richard Holmwood, Economic Adviser for the Overseas Territories Directorate.
The Governor’s main visit was to Heritage Collection Museum at East End which, by its comprehensive display of exhibits and documentation of various periods of Anguilla’s history – from the Amerindians to the 1967 Anguilla Revolution – covers in detail the island’s rich cultural and social life. Her Excellency was welcomed to the museum by its Curator, Mr Colville Petty OBE, who escorted her through the display rooms and explained the vast collection and display of exhibits.
The Governor took a keen interest in the work of the museum, taking much time to examine the exhibits and to comment appreciatively on them. She spoke to The Anguillian after her tour of the museum: “It was really interesting, finally, to get a chance to look into the museum. I have had a really interesting time as the whole history of Anguilla was explained through some fascinating exhibits and some useful information. It helps to bring the history of Anguilla to life and I am looking forward to seeing some of the scenes at the museum in real life over the next few weeks.”
Just before arriving at the museum, Governor Scott viewed the neighbouring Old East School from which sprang many of Anguilla’s leading scholars at home and abroad.
Her tour of the eastern end of the island also included stops at the Owen Mussington Playing Field at the Pond Ground where she spoke to Mr Mussington and other persons; the “On da Rocks” Restaurant at island Harbour where she met the captain and crew of the racing boat UFO; the pier where she met a number of fishermen; St Andrew’s Anglican Church where she met leaders of the Scouts, Guides and Pathfinders; the Welches Polyclinic where she spoke with medical and nursing personnel; and Vanterpool’s Services where she met a number of villages residents.
Mr Vanterpool, the district’s elected representative, commented that he was pleased to have accompanied the Governor and that she enjoyed the tour very much.
