The Reverend Deacon Amonteen Ravenden Bryan-Doward, a native of Anguilla, is believed to be the first Anguillian woman ordained as a Priest in the Anglican Ministry.
In informing The Anguillian this week about her recent ordination, at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in St. Croix, the Right Reverend Ambrose Gumbs, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of the Virgin Islands, said she was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests in Christ one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Bishop Gumbs, who is now holidaying in Anguilla, his homeland, stated that Reverend Amonteen previously served her diaconate at Holy Cross and St. John’s Episcopal Churches in St Croix. After her priestly ordination she was invited to serve as Supply Priest at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Upper Love, St. Croix. She also assists the Bishop at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Frederiksted, St Croix.
Reverend Amonteen’s ordination was attended by a large congregation which included her brothers Uriel and Rufus Bryan from The Quarter, Anguilla; her sister, Alice; and Anguilla’s Revolutionary Leader, Mr Ronald Webster, and Mrs Webster.
Another Anguillian, this time, a male candidate, the Reverend Reginald (Roy) Hodge, formerly of Little Dix, was ordained Deacon by Bishop AmbroseGumbs at the Cathedral Church of All Saints in St Thomas.His ordination took place in the presence of his brothers, Canon Valentine Hodge and Reverend Menes Hodge, and his sister, ElviseHickson, who were among the large congregation in attendance.
Reverend Hodge has been assigned to St Ursula’s Church in St John’s, and is serving under the supervision of the Reverend Canon Lionel Rymer.
