It has been extremely hot in July and August of this year and many of us might have used coconut water on its own, or with some other drink, to quench our thirst, but coconut water has many other health benefits and is a most refreshing drink.
What is coconut water?
Coconut water must not be confused with coconut milk. Coconut water is the liquid inside an immature green coconut and it is best to drink when it is more than five months as the water will have a bitter tinge if consumed earlier. This water is one of nature’s most refreshing drinks, and has many nutritious and health-promoting properties. Some companies now market it as a natural sports drink.
Why do people drink coconut water?
Coconut water is used in many Caribbean countries including Anguilla. Coconut water is 94% water and fairly low in calories. It seems to be a good source of B vitamins and potassium. Coconut water contains electrolytes, various plant hormones, enzymes, and amino acids. Some substances in coconut water could theoretically have antioxidant benefits in the body.
There have not been many scientific studies of coconut water. One study suggested that drinking coconut water might be associated with a lower rate of heart attacks. Another small study found that coconut water significantly lowered systolic blood pressure in 71% of people with hypertension.
Coconut water has been used as a way to rehydrate the body after exercise or illness. Coconut water has even been used as an emergency substitute for IV solutions. Also, it may be a good storage solution for a tooth that has been knocked out until someone can see a dentist.
Benefits of drinking coconut water
Use in cases of diarrhoea
Coconut water is very beneficial after a bout of diarrhoea as it replaces fluid loss. Some individuals use coconut water if oral rehydration fluids are not available in cases of diarrhoea.
Coconut water is rich in amino acids, enzymes, dietary fibre, vitamin C and minerals such as potassium, magnesium and manganese. At the same time it is low in cholesterol and chlorides. This fluid is ideal in maintaining body fluids when a person gets dehydrated. Coconut water contains a good amount of electrolyte potassium, thus it can replenish the electrolyte composition in body fluids.
Plasma replacement
Historically, coconut water in the Pacific was a replacement for plasma in war time when blood plasma was limited.
Energy drink
In some countries coconut water is now marketed as an energy drink. Abundant in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, coconut water makes a wonderful energy drink. In particular, coconut water has less sugar and sodium content compared to most sports drinks, while packing more potassium, calcium, and chloride which makes it a better choice to rehydrate, replenish and boost the body’s energy levels after any strenuous activity or workout.
Improve body’s metabolism
Coconut water is a natural electrolyte and isotonic beverage which helps increase the body’s metabolism. Therefore, it can greatly benefit people who are struggling with weight issues.Drinking coconut water helps a person to lose weight as it is low in fat and it keeps a person feeling full. It also reduces food cravings.
Healing and ageing process
Researchers have found that Cytokinins found in coconut water help regulate the cell growth and their divisions. Coconut water also contains lauric acid which can minimise the aging of skin cells, balance PH levels, and keep the connective tissues strong and hydrated. Applying coconut water onto affected skin areas every night before going to bed may help with acne, age spots, wrinkles, stretch marks, cellulite and eczema. More studies are needed in this area, however, before it can be universally accepted for this use.
What are the risks of taking coconut water?
Coconut water is considered to be safe for children, and for pregnant, and breastfeeding women. If you are taking potassium supplements it is recommended to regulate your potassium levels since coconut water is high in potassium.
Side effects. Coconut water has not been well-studied, but there is no evidence that it poses side effects. Like fruit or vegetable juices, coconut water seems quite safe.
Risks. Check with a doctor before you begin using coconut water as a treatment if you have any health conditions.
Interactions. If you take regular medications or supplements, talkto your doctor before you start using coconut water as a treatment.
Conclusion
Fresh coconut water is one of the best natural drinks on the face of the earth. It is one of the most popular drinks in Anguilla. In addition to its refreshing qualities coconut water has many other health benefits. As far as I know it does not have any known side effects unless somebody is prone to having allergic reactions or has severe nut allergies. As we continue to have very hot and humid days ahead of us all of us will need lots of coconut water to keep us cool and healthy.
