Six young Anguillian sailors competed in Tortola over the weekend in the Fifteenth Annual Chief Minister’s Cup sailing competition having won the gold award there last year.
They were among teams from Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, BVI, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, St. Croix and Sail Caribbean – Team USA. The Anguillian competitors placed first on Saturday; and on Sunday came fifth in the overall competition.
“The races were changed up this year. Usually all the teams raced at once, but this time there were only five boats with five teams in the morning and five in the afternoon,” Kendal Richardson, Coach for the Anguillian boat racers said. “We went in on Saturday afternoon and got first place and on Sunday the top boats raced against each other and we came fifth.”
Asked whether his sailors were disappointed this time, after having shown much mastery in the 2012 competition, Richardson, who is leaving Anguilla in August to attend Sailing School, replied: “It was a bit disappointing, but it was all a learning experience. The boys did what they had to, and they are just going to come back stronger next year.”
The Anguillian sailors were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Anguilla, and were accompanied by Rotarians Harris Richardson and Seymour Hodge. Rotary President, Dr Lindel Brooks, who saw the youngsters off to Tortola, commended them on their participation in the competition and for their excellent performance in the past.
