Retired at the age of sixty years on July 5th, Ms Veda Harrigan, who served as Education Officer, Pre and Primary Education, received glowing tributes for her sterling contribution to learning at a special birthday dinner at La Vue on Saturday, July 6.
Permanent Secretary, Education, Mrs Chanelle Petty-Barrett, described Ms Harrigan as having been a hard worker. She said the retiree had given much of her time to educating the children of Anguilla as well as to the development of education.
“She is a model teacher…a model civil servant,” Mrs Petty-Barrett said.
The PS added that she touched the lives of many persons during her 40 years and 9 months in her teaching profession.
Many teachers praised Ms Harrigan for her passion and for always working in the interest of children.
Former Chief Minister, and former Minister of Education, Mr Osbourne Fleming, extended congratulations to Ms Harrigan. He encouraged teachers to work for as long as possible. He said it was unfortunate that persons had to retire noting that sometimes afterwards they might find themselves in financial difficulty. Mr Fleming, who retired from active politics three years ago, observed that persons about to retire should always think of something to do after that.
Ms Harrigan’s daughter, Mrs Lataisha Fleming-Burford, expressed admiration and love for her mother whom she called her a role model. She spoke on behalf of herself and her brother Kareem Fleming.
Teacher Veda Harrigan was grateful to the past and present Governments of Anguilla for the courses she attended over the years.
