He told the newspaper that he was the recently-appointed Resident Indian High Commissioner in Georgetown, Guyana. “I am accredited to the Caribbean islands and Anguilla is among them…and then I am the Ambassador to CARICOM. Today I came to present my letter of appointment as Consul General of India to Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory. I presented my Letter of Credentials to His Excellency the Governor.”

He was pleased to have met a few nationals of Guyana during his visit to Anguilla and commented: “Guyanese are a nice people, you know.”

Mr.Meena stated that the Caribbean region was of much interest to India which was in support of climate change programmes and other initiatives being undertaken by the Governments and people of the various territories. He noted that the region was home to a large number of Indians involved in such small businesses as jewellery and electronics and in the hospitality sector.

“I am sure that in this island also there are many Indians,” he added. “They are doing, according to my information from local people, very good work; they are very disciplined and are nice people. I look after their interest. My interest also involves the local Government in that if they [the Indians] need anything and you can’t help them, please contact me so that I can come here and help them.”

Mr Meena, who arrived in Anguilla on Wednesday evening, June 12, left the island on Friday, June 14, to return to Guyana.
