Sixteen-year-old Rechelle Meade, a Fourth Form student at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, may be following into the footsteps of the renowned Anguillian long jumper, Shara Proctor.
Rechelle, whose mother, Ruth Meade, is an Anguillian Teacher at the Orealia Kelly Primary School, has already made a name for herself, both in high jump and long jump, but with a growing interest in the latter sport.
She has been selected by the Department of Sports as the best young athlete in Anguilla to attend a training camp in long jump in Ukraine for one week commencing July 2. After that, she will be participating in the World Youth Championships there for another week. Her participation in both the training camp and the competition will be funded by the International Association of Athletic Federations. She should be back in Anguilla on July 17.
Deputy Director of Sports, Rollins Richardson, said that Rechelle’s recent performance in the BVI Invitational Meet on June 1, 2013 had qualified her as Anguilla’s best young candidate to train and compete in Ukraine. In the long jump event in the BVI she jumped 5.74m which Mr.Richardson described as having been a remarkable feat by her. He added that her prospects as a successful athlete were very good and that, in due course, she was looking forward to participating in the Olympics World Senior Championships which could be achieved by hard work.
Commenting on her coming athletic trip to Ukraine, Rechelle said: “I am quite excited. I hope that I will perform well and not disappoint anyone; that I will be able to do my best and will be happy with what I do.”
