Eight young Anguillian athletes, drawn from the Adrian T Hazell and Valley Primary Schools, and the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, are representing Anguilla at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Age Group Championship Athletics in Curacao.
The boys and girls team, managed by Mrs.Tracelyn Hamilton, Principal of the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School, left here on Wednesday this week to join thirty-two other competing teams from the region. Mr Alexis Ryan, one of the coaches, is also accompanying the local athletes.
“The Primary School athletes (from the Adrian T Hazell and Valley Schools), in the 11-12 years category, will be competing in the Tenth Pentathlon which is five events, and the Under 15 from Campus B will be competing in the Heptathlon involving seven events,” Ryan told The Anguillian.
The events for the age group 11-12 years are – Boys: 60 meter dash; 1000 meters; Long Jump; High Jump; and Basketball Throw. Girls: 60 meter dash; 800 meters; Long Jump; High Jump and Basketball Throw.
The events for the age group 13-14 years are – Boys: 80 meter dash; 1200 meters; 80 meter hurdles; Long Jump; High Jump, Basketball Throw and Shot Put. Girls: 80 meter dash; 1000 meters; 60 meter hurdles; Long Jump; High Jump; Basketball Throw and Shot Put.
There will be also a Mixed 4×100 Meter Relay for the athletes in both categories.
Two years ago, the Primary Schools’ team in Anguilla came third in the biennial athletic competition.
The Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships is an international track and field athletics event for the youngest athletes (boys and girls between the age of 11 and 14 years). The CAC Age Group Championships started in 1985 in Curacao and, are held every two years.
