Island Harbour, Sunday, the fifth of May, the Attorney General, the Honourable James Wood, QC, spent a day relaxing at sea while voyaging past the Anguilla Bank in the far North. He was angling for the big fish with the renowned fisherman, Mr. Patrick Webster, the perennial winner of the Festival Del Mar deep sea fishing tournaments and industrious source for fresh fish for Anguilla’s finest chefs and most discerning guests. The AG is a patron of the Island Harbour shops and restaurants, and he has been known to ponder the splendor of the ocean from her shores since arriving here in 2011. However, with a cautious constitution, his opportunities to go fishing would always be limited to serene waters and calm weather. At last, Sunday gone offered his inaugural Anguilla deep sea fishing day.
As is seen in the photograph, the party pulled two shimmering Wahoo into the boat, even though Patrick complained mightily that they did not compare to his typical fifty pounders. Once ultimately securing the first Wahoo on board, the AG smiled with appreciation and remarked, “Harder than it looks but great fun!” He was already a bit weary, having personally caught at least fifteen 3-5 pound tuna on a hand line specially rigged to catch two fish simultaneously. Several times, four steel blue tuna thrashed against one another when caught concurrently on only two such lines. In all, nearly forty tuna were caught in an hour or so. And, just to add a grand finale to the AG’s first Anguilla fishing day, a small pod of humpback whales provided live entertainment at the Anguilla Bank with their languid frolicking on the trip back to Island Harbour.
