Anguilla struggled at NORCECA Women’s Second Round Group I qualifiers to the 2014 FIVB World Championship
Anguilla’s first encounter was against Honduras on Saturday morning. The team captain, Tessa Michelle Flores and her sister Dariana Flores combined for 23 points to lead Honduras to an easy 3 sets -0 sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-11) win in 62 minutes over Anguilla in their NORCECA Women’s Second Round Group I qualifier to the 2014 FIVB World Championship at the University of the West Indies Sports and Physical Educational Centre, St Augustine, Trinidad.
Anguilla, which only arrived in T&T late on Friday night due to travelling delays got a team high 12 points from captain, Susan Webster.Speaking after the loss, Webster said her team was still trying to recover from reaching the tournament so late.She explained, “Personally, some of the younger players on the team are not used to that kind of travelling. It was a little bit tough on us, but at the same time I don’t think the match was that difficult. We made it very difficult for ourselves.”
In their second match against Barbados on Saturday night Barbados won 3sets -0 sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-15). Barbados was dominant in all aspects of its 55-minutes victory, 25-12 in spikes, 8-2 on blocks and 9-1 on service aces as they remained in contention for a spot in the gold medal match on Sunday night. For Anguilla, which dropped to a 0-2 record in the group, captain, Susan Webster got six points and Ludianne Leveret, five.
Despite the two losses, Anguilla met Honduras again inthe Group I bronzemedal match. This was in the penultimate match of the two-day four-team tournament on Sunday night.
For Honduras in addition to Flores, who had seven kills in her tally, Mariajosse Diaz and Dariana Flores added eight points each in the 64 minutes win for the Central Americans who dominated, 24-15 on spikes, 5-0 on blocks and 15-3 on service aces.
For Anguilla, Captain Susan Webster had eight points and Rikiesha Leveret, five in the loss.
It was the second win in as many meetings for the 18th NORCECA?ranked Hondurans over Anguilla, ranked 22nd, after registering a 25-15, 25-12, 25-11 win in their round-robin encounter on Saturday’s opening day of the tournament.
Webster, speaking after the defeat said she was extremely disappointed with the outcome as she had hoped for a better fight from her team.“We now have to go home and start from scratch, back to the drawing board and try and work on the many things we have to improve from this tournament.”
Dominoes:-
The Anguilla Day Three Hand Domino competition came to end on Sunday with six teams participating in the final round. Those teams were Lions, Uncle Keys, K9, Grillers, Police and Warriors. After two rounds of intense dominoe action, Police emerged victorious as the Anguilla Day 3 Hand Domino Champions. Congratulations!
Netball:-
The Anguilla Day Inter-Island Fast Five Netball competition took place in spite of the inclement weather over the weekend. Points at the end of the tournament were as follows: St Maarten – 25, St. Kitts – 17 Dominica and Jamaica – 15, Anguilla A – 9 and Anguilla B – 5.

Athletics:-
Despite the inclement weather a number of the athletes turned out at the JRWP to celebrate WORLD ATHLETICS DAY 2013. This event also featured a number of relay races as well as trials for those athletes vying for a spot on the national teams that will be travelling to BVI this weekend and other athletes travelling to Curacao at the end of June.
Carifta games 2013 100m gold medalist Mr. Zharnel Hughes will be arriving in Anguilla on Wednesday at approximately 6:15 at Blowing Point. All fans, supporters and well-wishers are invited to meet and greet Mr. Zharnel Hughes on his arrival.
In her second Diamond League contest of the 2013 season, Shara Proctor placed 2nd with a leap of 6.72 meters in New York on Saturday. Her next competition will again be in Diamond League action in Rome on June 6th.
Cycling:-
A cycle race was held as part of the pre celebrations leading up to Anguilla Day 2013. It started at 2:10 pm with 27 cyclists; a combination of both Elite & Masters participated. The route was 8 laps for Masters and 10 laps for the Elite riders around the Jeremiah Gumbs highway. The race started and ended by the highway tire shop.

Basketball:-
The local basketball tournament is still in progress. Games were postponed due to bad weather and will be rescheduled at a later date. Please visit www.anguillabasketball.comfor more information about the scheduling of the games to be played.
A 3 on 3 basketball tournament is being organized for the Blowing Point community. It is scheduled to begin on the 1st June. It is a knockout tournament and it is expected to be an exciting event. Matches are set to begin Saturday at 4 o’clock and teams are expected to register by Thursday May 30th.
Her majesty prison is having their first ever 4 on 4 basketball tournament for inmates beginning on June 3rd to June 11th at the prison. There are 5 teams registered to take part in this tournament.
Cricket:-
The local 20/20 tournament is still in progress. Games will continue this weekend at the James Ronald Webster Park.
