Over the weekend several of Anguilla’s young athletes rubbed shoulders with regional and Olympic stars as they participated in the second annual Speedy Plus track and field meet in French St. martin on Saturday May 11 2013. Though Lashawn Merritt (former Olympic 400m champion) stole the show with a blistering 400m dash, it was the Anguillan athletes who pilfered the hearts of the fans.
Several athletes such as young Aiden Hazard scorched the field in the junior boys 1000m. His efforts earned him the gold medal and he was also was award the trophy for the most outstanding male junior athlete. Keron Rogers (aka Speedy) walked away from the field in his international B class 100m, defeating his opponents by some 10 meters. Richelle Meade was also fantastic as she won the female long jump competition. Huquame Hughes (1000m), Anasha Connor (1000m) and Tikala Richardson had the viewing public pining for more with one brilliant performance after another.
The continued improved performances of the Anguillan athletes must be applauded. Therefore it is only fitting those coachesMrs. Wilma Proctor, Mr. Alexis Ryan, Mrs. Heather Richardson, Mr. Nigel Linton, Mr. Nashaine Johnson and Mr. Derrick Griffith be acknowledged for the hard work and dedication they have displayed over the course of the season.
Therefore, the Anguilla Amateur Athletics Federation would like to thank the organizers of the Speedy plus track meet, the many athletes and parents and coaches for supporting the athletes and making them successful.
