Left hand opening batsman Chesney Hughes struck big for Derbyshire against Yorkshire in England. Hughes scored a mammoth 270 runs not out as Derby went on to score 475 all out. Hughes’ innings consisted of some 40 fours and 3 sixes. He was just 4 runs shy of Derby’s all-time record of 274 which has been there for over 100 years. He showed a great mixture of finesse and power, stroking the ball all over the ground. What made the innings even more special was the fact that he scored the runs against three international bowlers who play for England.
Hughes is the third Anguillian to play First Class cricket in England, following Cardigan Connor, who played for Hampshire, and Omari Banks who played for Somerset. Hughes’ innings was his fifth century for Derby.
Hughes spoke about wanting to have a fruitful season this year and by the looks of this innings he is well on his way. We look forward to hearing about a lot more big innings from him, and continue to wish him the best.
