Thirty-four pilots, who are participating in this year’s Governor General’s Caribbean Air Challenge of Canada, were welcomed to Anguilla on Thursday, April 18.

The group came from Canada, the United States, Sweden, France, Chile and Switzerland. The Caribbean Air Rally, from April 15 to 28, in which they are competing, started in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. From there the pilots, travelling on thirteen planes, flew to Anguilla via the Turks and Caicos Islands. They are competing for the Canada Governor General’s Cup which involves performing various navigational, landing and survival skills.

The pilots, whose trip to Anguilla was arranged through the Tourist Board, were officially welcomed to the island at a reception held at Government House by Governor and Mrs. Alistair Harrison on the evening of their arrival.
Director of Tourism, Mrs.Candis Niles, speaking to the media, during that reception, expressed delight over the second visit to Anguilla by the pilots. She was particularly pleased that the programme for their visit involved a number of activities arranged by the Tourist Board, small properties and restaurants, giving them an opportunity to experience Anguillian hospitality. The programme culminated with a final reception at Smokey’s Restaurant at The Cove.

The group left Anguilla on Saturday, April 20, for Martinique from where they were expected to travel to Nevis and the Dominican Republic.
