(ANGUILLA, MARCH 5, 2013) – The Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association has spent the last few weeks leading up to Commonwealth Day speaking to each of the primary schools about the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014 Games and the role of the Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association. The association also had some exciting news to share with the school children about their sporting activities as a part of the schools’ Commonwealth Day celebrations.

Commonwealth Day 2013 marks the start of a new tradition for the Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association. Each primary school will be given a ‘Commonwealth Sports Day Shield’, presented by the Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association as part of the sporting activities that currently take place on this day. Starting this year, the name of the winning house from the school’s Commonwealth Sport Day will have their house name engraved on the plaque. In addition to competing for the title of winning house within each primary school, the houses now will strive to see their name appear on their school’s plaque.
On Commonwealth Day and the week following, each school will receive their plaque in an official award presentation. The association is currently planning and confirming the details of these presentations to make this a memorable occasion for all the children. The association is hoping to involve athletes who have attended a Commonwealth Games in the past with the award presentations.
Although this sports day is a competition in the traditional sense, competing to be the winning house, the association has taken this opportunity to discuss with the children the spirit of the Commonwealth Games and the goals of participating in this sports competition; trying your best, having fun, good sportsmanship, positive attitudes and encouraging others.
To date, some schools have participated in their sports competition and are looking forward to the award presentations on March 11th; while others are set to compete on March 8th and March 11th.
The association has been welcomed with open arms to each school and is very impressed with the enthusiasm from both the teachers and students about this event. This is only year one of this tradition, and the association is already excited to see how it will grow in the future!
