A considerable amount of interest and excitement was generated by the first Inter-House History Jeopardy Competition presented by The Investigators – the History Club of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School – at the Rodney Mac Arthur Rey Auditorium on Thursday, March 14. The event included six categories of questions: Dates, Places, Names, Government, Environment and Anguilla Miscellaneous. The questions carried from 100 to 500 points which were doubled in the fourth round. (There was a total of five rounds.)
The Investigators club was founded by Mrs. Jan Challenger-Gibson in October 2008 to encourage year 1-6 students to develop an appreciation for the history and culture of the region. The competing teams, bearing flags representing their colours, entered the Auditorium to the music of the famous game show, Jeopardy, as the announcer, Colin Johnson, known for his high energy profile, took to the stage.
Maroon House was coached by Mrs. Michelle Carty; Orange House by Ms Shauna Richardson; Pink House by Ms. Judy Edwards; Purple House by Mr. Rodney Rey; and Yellow House by Ms. Shan Webster.
The Judges were Evette Harrigan of Safe Cargo, Farah Mukhida of the National Trust and Charlene Hodge who represented Tropical Treats. The host and coordinator of the event, Mrs. Challenger-Gibson, took her position on stage as the competition began.
One hundred and twenty-one history-related questions were presented to the students in the six categories. The players impressed the audience with their knowledge of Anguilla’s history as they hurriedly pressed their buzzers.
Tsani Rogers of Pink House took home the Mrs. Janiera Challenger-Gibson award, scored a total of 5,900 points, making her Best Quizzer of the event. Her prize of an EC$405 gift certificate at L&J Business Machines was sponsored by Mr. David Lloyd of daVida Restaurant and Spa. Remieko Richards, of Purple House, scored 5,400 points overall, placing him 2nd best Quizzer.
The History Club presented brief performances between rounds one and two, with the ‘triplet rappers’ a highlight. Coupons and prizes were awarded between rounds to members of the audience from the sponsors of the competition.
After round 4, the points were as follows: Maroon House 9,800; Pink House 9,200; Purple House 8,600; Orange House 7,800; and Yellow House 4,900. However, the Final Jeopardy determined the winning house. The players during this part of the game were Shakilah Carty of Maroon; Arielle Gaskin of Pink; Remieko Richards of Purple; Remesha Minette of Orange; and Majestee Paul of Yellow. Maron House, being in the lead, risked only 3,000 points, while Remieko of Purple House took a bold step and risked all of the House’s 8,600 points.
Purple House won the entire event with a total of 17,200 points. Pink House took second place with 15,700 points; and Maroon House settled for third place with 12,800 points.
