Historic is one word that can be used to describe the recently concluded 2012 Volleyball season in Anguilla, the season was filled with many firsts, tournaments and training opportunities for the members of the Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association. For the first time, in history, both the male and female national squads have progressed to the second (2nd) round of the Volleyball World Cup Qualifiers, an international and regional based tournament. In addition to this, male and female beach volleyball teams attended the 9th Phase Norceca Beach Volleyball Continental Circuit Tournament in St. Lucia.
The Jumeirah Resort sponsored its first ever beach volleyball tournament, which was opened to both adults and the primary schools. The Jumeirah Beach Volleyball Classic was staged at the scenic and historic Forest Bay and returned many locals to this forgotten beach. The primary school division was won by the Valley Primary School, the male open division was won by Ian ‘Tucker’ Connor and Darren ‘Eldon’ Webster and the female open division was won by Marsha Edwards and Suzan Webster
On the hard court, the Morris Vanterpool Primary Schools female squad and the Alwyn Allison Primary School male squad won the titles in the Malliouhana Anico Insurance Company (MAICO) Primary School Championship Tournament. The Six (6) Government and Two (2) Private Primary Schools were gifted with volleyball equipment including nets, balls, and ball carts and coaching for the afore-mentioned tournament courtesy of the Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association (AAVA).
2013 plans to be a very active year for the sport of Volleyball in Anguilla. The male and female national squads are slated to travel to Surinam (June 13 -17) and Trinidad (May 23-26) respectively, to participate in the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers. The male junior squad will travel to St. Martin (11-15 July), while the female junior squad will travel to St. Lucia to participate in the ECVA Junior Championships. Antigua will host the male and female youth tournaments at a date to be announced. Players will also have the opportunity to participate in several regional beach volleyball events slated for Caymans, Mexico and other countries.
Locally, the exciting 2013 Business Volleyball League will begin March 1st at the James Ronald Webster Park (JRWP). Business places can register their teams with any member of the Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association (AAVA) by February 22nd or email us at anguillavolleyball@gmail.com. The National Championships, both male and female will start shortly after the completion of the Business League on a date to be later announced. The second edition of the Jumeirah Beach Volleyball Classic is slated for later this year and any teams wishing to participate can do so.
