“Medicinal Herbs of Anguilla” is the title of a booklet to be launched by Leroy Browne (Ijomo) at J W Proctor’s Supermarket on Saturday, February 9, between 10 am and 12noon.
Browne is the operator of “Desert Green” an area of farmland, in the Blowing Point area, which he considers to be a replica of Anguilla’s sporadic desert and green shrubs.
The booklet lists a number of plants and their possible medicinal properties which have traditionally been regarded as providing healing and revitalising benefits to consumers.
The plants include Bitter Tamarind; Ringworm Bush; Corn; Dandelion; Eye Bright/Scorpion Weed; Callaloo; Lovebush; Man Better Man; Aloes; Mauby; Horse Rubdown; Pusley; Hallow Stark [and other names]; Ram Goat Bush; French Thyme/Stingy Time; White Cedar; White Head; Wild Coffee/Stinking Weed; Vervine Vive; and Yellow Thistle. (All plants carry their scientific and other names.)
“Ijomo” Browne, the author, has had a love for plants, botany and natural foods and medicines since his teen years. He enjoys his part-time lecturing and writing about the medicinal properties of plants, fruits and vegetables and has a passion for organic gardening. While maintaining a consummate preoccupation in this field, he is actively pursuing tertiary education, as a new interest, aimed at self-development.
Browne is an ambitious and quiet young man – a fine example to other youngsters wishing to pursue a positive goal in life. He is appealing for the support of members of the public at the launching of his booklet at the weekend. He is hoping that weekend shoppers at J W Proctors would use the opportunity to purchase a copy of his very useful publication.
His booklet and all of his other work have been endorsed by Clinical Psychologist, Dr. M. Linda Banks, a Lecturer at Saint James Medical School. In the foreword to the booklet, she wrote in part: “I invited Mr. Browne to address my students. He confidently presented an amazing array of traditional local plants which students could see, touch, smell and take away, if they so desired. It was immediately obvious that he had had extensive research on the plants, because not only could he provide their medicinal properties, indications and contraindications for use, but he was also able to offer some sound technical knowledge of their scientific names…
“It is therefore without reservation that I commend Mr. Browne on this publication and wish him continued success in his mission to educate everyone about the healing attributes of nature.”
