Young Zharnel Hughes has been awarded a scholarship to attend the IAAF’s Regional High Performance Training Centre in Jamaica. 2012 has been a year of revelation for Zharnel, as he earned several medals at various regional competitions. He earned a bronze medal in the U20 boys 100m dash with a time of 10:41 (wind speed 5.7m/s) at the Carifta Games inBermuda.
Later inTortolahe established several new records for the Leeward Islands Juniors 100 and 200m dash and the all comers record as well. He continued in fine style as he won the 200m with a record time of 20:98 seconds, and placed second in the 100 dash with a time of 10:45 seconds at the CAC U20 Championships that were held inEl Salvador. InSpainhe produced a personal best time of 20:90 seconds in the 200m dash.
Zharnel’s exploits have resulted in him being ranked as the fourth fastest male youth athlete in the world for the 200m, and fifth fastest for the 100m dash. His improvement in 2012 has not gone unnoticed by regional and international coaches.
The Anguilla Amateur Athletics Federation would like to congratulate Zharnel and Shara for their achievements and wishes them the best in their future pursuits. The AAAF expects that the achievements of Zharnel and Shara will serve to highlight the opportunities that are available to its other athletes once they are prepared to discipline themselves and strive to improve the standard of their performances.
