Five students have received scholarship awards, in the sum of EC$1000 each, from Digicel Anguilla in a presentation ceremony on Tuesday this week.
The awardees are Leeford Gumbs and Javon Brooks of The Valley Primary School, and Devisha Brooks, D’guan Martin and Twayna Thomas of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.
The presentations were made by Digicel’s Marketing Executive, Jervis Richardson. “We have awarded five lucky students with a scholarship for a thousand dollars each,” he said. “It was a promotion that was held from the 15th of August to the 15th of September.
“Parents and well-wishers were required to come to Digicel’s store – and when they paid their bills in full and on time, topped up their phones by $15 or purchase a new service, they received a voucher. On that voucher they were requested to write the names of the students in their lives. We had a raffle on Klass FM and DJ Sugar pulled five names from the bag. We are awarding those five children with cheques.”
Mr. Richardson explained that, taking into account the difficult economic situation in Anguilla, Digicel had undertaken this year to give back to the community from most of its value-added promotions. “We had ‘Cash Back’ which assisted to ease the financial burdens of a number of persons. We just launched a new promotion where you top up $20 and you receive $300 in value. There are a lot of other promotions, including this one, the ‘Back to School’ promotion, where we give cash to customers to assist them in this difficult financial situation.”
Principal of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, Mrs. Ingrid Lake, commented: “It is commendable that Digicel has decided to offer these scholarships to the students at a time when we are experiencing such financial difficulties. I trust that the students will use the money to purchase all the textbooks they require and, that, having purchased the books, they are going to use them well so that they can perform good during this school year and in the years to come.”
